The first thing you notice when you open the book North
is the stunning photography. Brilliant outdoor photos accompany all
seven stories by authors expressing what "North" means to them. With a
forward by Ron Schara, this book is sure to capture your attention,
take you on a journey and help define what North means to you.
Beginning
the journey is a poem about the magic of the Boundary Waters. The
imagery along with the black and white photos capture the essence of
the northern experience – the water, the wilderness and the wildlife.
Then comes a charming story of one man’s lifelong dream of encountering
a moose in the wilderness. Growing up listening to his grandfather’s
tales of these magnificent creatures instilled in him a need to see
this "Northwoods icon" for himself. But before he was successful at
discovering a moose, he found he had successfully discovered a whole
lot more. Next is a collection of photos that capture the amazing
beauty of the sky that many of us have enjoyed while hunting or
fishing. Following these breathtaking photos is Those Four Days,
a touching story of a boy becoming a man with the help of his family’s
fifty-year tradition of fishing trips to Lake of the Woods. During
those fishing trips a special bond was formed between him and his dad –
a bond so many of us can identify with. Then we get to accompany a
wildlife researcher as he looks for timber rattlesnakes along the
bluffs of the Mississippi River Valley of southeast Minnesota and
western Wisconsin. Again, this captivating story is filled with
incredible close-up photos of these awesome animals. White Deer, Spirit Deer
takes us to the woods of northern Wisconsin in pursuit of photographing
the rare and elusive albino deer. The writer takes us along as he
experiences the thrill of capturing on film some of the magic of these
white deer. And finally we get to take a delightful and historic tour
of some of the lighthouses of the Great Lakes.
North
is thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. It's a perfect coffee table
book for the cabin or the city home – anywhere you want to sit back,
relax and take a journey North. |
